This guide explains how admins can customize structured Investigation and Performance Improvement (PI) workflows — adding steps and blocks, reordering content, and controlling what appears in new cases.
Key Concepts
| Term | What it means |
| Core step | A built-in step that ships with the workflow (e.g. Evidence, Interviews). Cannot be deleted or reordered. |
| Core block | The built-in content inside a core step. Cannot be deleted or reordered. |
| Custom step | A step you add as an admin in the workflow editor. |
| Custom block | A block you add to any step — core or custom. |
Investigation Workflow Editor
Adding Custom Steps
You can add custom steps to the Investigation workflow and place them anywhere — including between existing core steps. To delete a custom step, select it and confirm in the dialog that appears.
Core steps (such as Assign Investigator, Evidence, Interviews) cannot be deleted, reordered, or have their built-in blocks removed.
Adding Custom Blocks
Custom blocks can be added to any step, including core steps. When you add a custom block to a core step, it will always appear below the step's built-in content — custom blocks cannot be placed above the core content.
Editing Step Names and Descriptions
The name of any core step can be edited. However, the description/instructions field is hidden for core steps and is only available on custom steps.
Hiding and Showing Core Steps
Some core steps can be toggled on or off using the eye icon. A hidden step is grayed out in the editor with a strikethrough name and will not appear in new cases.
Steps that can be hidden:
- Collect Evidence
- Interviews
- Recommendations
- Take Actions
- Wellness Check
Steps that cannot be hidden (no eye icon):
- Assign Investigator
- Investigation Plan
- Review Findings
- Summary Report
Performance Improvement (PI) Workflow Editor
Adding Custom Steps and Blocks
As with Investigation workflows, you can add custom steps to a PI workflow, drag them between core steps, and delete them. Custom blocks can be added to any step.
Hiding Core Steps
All PI core steps support the eye icon — any of them can be hidden. A hidden step is grayed out in the editor and will not appear in new cases.
Core Blocks
PI core steps contain special blocks such as - PI Actions, Select Manager, Employee Details, Performance Actions - that are not available in the block-type dropdown. Because they cannot be recreated from scratch, they are protected from deletion.
- Display a lock icon badge in the editor
- Cannot be edited or deleted
- Cause their parent step to be non-deletable — steps containing a protected block can only be hidden, not removed
How Changes Affect Cases
- Hidden steps do not appear when a case is opened.
- On Investigation workflow steps with custom blocks, the built-in step content renders first, followed by any custom blocks below it.
- Changes only apply to new cases created after you save. Existing cases are not affected.
